Chapter Twenty-One

Hayes

I STARE DOWN AT MY drawing pad, propped up on the powder blue hood of Mal’s baby. A wide-eyed sketch of Ava’s face I don’t remember dashing out stares back at me. All over the page, neat architectural lines meant to sketch out a potential new office in the east wing tangle around each other. The functional loops that top the exterior trees morph into wild looping coils of hair. The curved lines of the southwest turret become the delicate swoop of her collar bone. Instead of a home for my practice, my drawing pad is Ava, sprawled out across my desk. All big eyes and round cheeks. A present wrapped up just for me in my dress shirt.

What am I doing? Work, Pack business, and the shit with my parents are what need my attention today. Instead my subconscious decides the best use of my time is to... draw my omega like a lovesick pup?

I toss my pencil down and stretch out the stiff muscles of my neck, the corner of my mouth kicking up as I look back at the picture again. Lots of shoulds are flying around my head right now. It should disturb me how far gone I am for her, but I don’t have any fucks left to give.

Claiming an omega was always the plan, regardless of Aiden’s twitchiness. Our reward for all the blood and sweat we’ve poured into the Hallows over the past decade. But back when all of this was just a dream, when I thought about who this omega would be, I just assumed they’d be a product of a well-placed bribe. A pack prince or princess, found by contracting with a matching agency, an omega who got off on an extra bit of rough they thought shifter mates would bring to the table. Neat. Practical. A mutually beneficial partnership. A transaction that would only affect us as much as we wanted it to.

Ava didn’t get the message. She’s affecting whatever the fuck she wants. Mysteries crop up everywhere around this girl, and goddamn if I’m not throwing myself into solving them without a care about what the fallout on us will be. The Hayes of yesterday would be pissed. Since my shitshow of a presentation at fifteen, my entire life has been devoted to doing what needed to be done to make sure me and mine were never at someone else’s beck and call. My drive for control is still there, but the point of why it exists snapped into focus the moment Ava’s sharp little teeth savaged my lip.

All of this is for her now. The pivot is easy. No regrets. Zero looking back. Just the driving urge to make sure nothing and no one takes her away from us.

So focus!

The sooner I get through this to-do list, the sooner I can see about getting back to Ava and finishing what we started on Pack Night. Rumbling in agreement, my wolf makes his presence known for the first time today.
